From 63 to 192: How MB Sports Academy's OCPS Girls Flag Football League Is Becoming a Movement

In 2024, 63 girls took the field at Lockhart Middle School for the MB Sports Academy OCPS Middle School Girls Flag Football League.

In 2025, that number grew to 84 girls: again at Lockhart Middle School with 4 OCPS MiddleSchools.

Then, in 2026, something extraordinary happened: 192 girls participated across OCPS-ACE K-8 and Pershing K-8 had 6 OCPS MIDDLESCHOOLS PARTICIPATING.

That is more than growth. It is a signal.

Girls flag football is becoming a movement in Central Florida, and MB Sports Academy is proud to help build the foundation: one athlete, one school, one huddle, and one play at a time.

As we prepare for the 2027 OCPS Middle School Girls Flag Football League, we are not simply looking ahead to another season. We are celebrating the momentum already created and preparing to give even more girls the opportunity to compete, lead, learn, and belong.

The Numbers Tell the Story: 63 → 84 → 192

Every number represents a student-athlete.

It represents a girl who may have never played organized football before. A family discovering a new athletic opportunity. A coach helping an athlete learn how to throw, catch, defend, communicate, and recover after a difficult play.

  • 2024: 63 girls at Lockhart Middle School

  • 2025: 84 girls at Lockhart Middle School

  • 2026: 192 girls across OCPS-ACE K-8 and Pershing K-8

  • 2027: A new season of opportunity is on the horizon

The increase from 63 to 84 showed steady momentum. The jump to 192 demonstrated that the demand was much larger than one school or one season.

This growth reflects what families across Orlando are already seeing: girls want to play flag football, and they are ready to take the sport seriously while still enjoying the fun, energy, and friendships that make youth sports meaningful.

A Local League Connected to a National Rise

The growth of the OCPS league is part of a much larger story.

Flag football is expanding rapidly across the United States and around the world. Earlier in 2026, the Youth Flag Football World Championships at Walt Disney World brought together nearly 10,000 athletes from seven countries. The event featured dedicated girls divisions and demonstrated how quickly the sport has developed into a major youth athletic platform.

That international energy is especially meaningful here in Central Florida. The Disney championship was not just a large tournament: it was a reminder that athletes can begin playing flag football in a school or community league and eventually participate on major stages.

Florida has been a pioneer in girls flag football for more than two decades. The state helped establish the sport as an organized interscholastic opportunity in the early 2000s, and that foundation continues to influence the sport’s growth today. By 2009, Florida already had a strong girls flag football structure in place, helping make the state a national model for participation and competition. The next generation is now building on that history.

From Middle School Fields to College Opportunities

For young athletes and their parents, girls flag football is no longer just an after-school activity. It is becoming a legitimate pathway with opportunities at the high school, college, and international levels.

The sport is moving toward its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The 2026 IFAF World Championships in Düsseldorf served as an important qualifying event for the LA28 pathway, placing flag football on an even larger global stage. Explore IFAF’s World Flag 26 information.

At the college level, the landscape is expanding as well:

  • NCAA women’s flag football has received Emerging Sport for Women status, creating a path toward greater varsity participation and future championship opportunities.

  • NAIA programs continue to offer women’s flag football and athletic scholarship opportunities. Depending on current eligibility rules and a school’s available aid, families may hear programs discuss up to 12 scholarship equivalents per team. Scholarship structures vary, so athletes should always confirm details directly with each college.

  • NJCAA programs are also growing, giving athletes opportunities to compete at two-year colleges while developing academically and athletically.

This does not mean every middle school athlete must pursue college flag football. It means that the possibilities are wider than they were before.

The skills developed today: communication, confidence, discipline, body control, decision-making, and resilience: can benefit an athlete whether she eventually plays in college, joins a recreational league, or simply carries those lessons into the next stage of life.

Preparing Durable Athletes for the Demands of the Game

At MB Sports Academy, our approach goes beyond teaching plays.

Flag football requires quick acceleration, sudden changes of direction, repeated sprinting, body control, balance, and the ability to make decisions under pressure. Our training is designed to help athletes develop the physical foundation to perform those movements safely and effectively.

For female athletes, we place special emphasis on building strength and stability through the:

  • Core

  • Posterior chain

  • Hips

  • Back

  • Hamstrings

  • Balance and stabilizing muscles

These areas support efficient movement, sprinting, deceleration, cutting, and overall durability. Our holistic fitness training program focuses on movement education rather than simply asking athletes to work harder. We teach student-athletes how their bodies move, how to generate power, and how to control that power.

That foundation matters on the football field. It also matters in every other sport an athlete may play.

A girl who develops stronger movement habits through flag football may carry those benefits into soccer, basketball, softball, track, volleyball, and beyond. This is one reason MB Sports Academy believes in developing the whole athlete: not only the position player or the specialist.

Fundamentals First: Confidence Grows Through Competence

The 2027 league will continue to emphasize the fundamentals that help young athletes feel prepared and confident:

  • Throwing and catching

  • Route running

  • Defensive positioning

  • Flag pulling

  • Footwork and change of direction

  • Communication

  • Football IQ

  • Teamwork and sportsmanship

For many girls, the first few practices may feel unfamiliar. They may be learning how to line up, understand a formation, read a defender, or communicate with teammates for the first time.

That is why the environment matters.

A supportive coach can transform a mistake into a lesson. A teammate can turn uncertainty into encouragement. A well-structured practice can help an athlete leave the field thinking, “I can do this.”

The goal is not to remove challenges. The goal is to help girls face those challenges with preparation, support, and confidence.

And just as importantly, the league is designed to be fun. Athletes should compete with energy, laugh with teammates, celebrate improvement, and build memories that last beyond the final score.

The Huddle Is Bigger Than the Game

Flag football teaches teamwork during competition, but the lessons do not stop when the whistle blows.

Through MB Sports Academy’s Mentorship Huddle Program, athletes are encouraged to develop character, leadership, faith, communication, and resilience. The Huddle Group creates space for student-athletes to talk about adversity, success, responsibility, and the decisions they face away from the field.

This is an important part of our vision for the OCPS league.

We want girls to learn how to respond when a play does not go their way. We want them to understand how to encourage a teammate who is struggling. We want them to experience the confidence that comes from preparation and the humility that comes from being part of something bigger than themselves.

The scoreboard records the result of a game. The huddle reveals the growth of the athlete.

Building an OCPS Pipeline for the Future

The 2026 season’s participation numbers helped demonstrate the power of a broader OCPS pipeline. Today, the program is connected to a network of approximately 11 schools and more than 180 girls, creating a growing community of athletes, families, coaches, and school partners.

That type of pipeline can change the future of girls flag football in Orlando.

More schools mean more access. More access means more athletes discovering the sport. More athletes create stronger competition, deeper friendships, more leadership opportunities, and a larger pool of players who may continue into high school and college.

The growth also creates opportunities for older athletes to become mentors. A seventh or eighth grader who once needed help learning the basics may eventually become the teammate encouraging a new sixth grader. That is how a league becomes a community: and how a community becomes a movement.

What the 2027 Season Can Represent

The 2027 season is an opportunity to build on everything the athletes and families have created together.

It is an opportunity to welcome girls who are playing for the first time, challenge returning athletes to grow their football IQ, and strengthen the relationships among OCPS schools. It is an opportunity to give student-athletes a safe, structured environment where they can compete, improve, and have fun.

Most of all, it is an opportunity to remind every girl who takes the field that she belongs there.

From 63 girls at Lockhart Middle School in 2024 to 84 in 2025, and then to 192 across OCPS-ACE K-8 and Pershing K-8 in 2026, this story has already exceeded expectations.

The next chapter begins in 2027.

For families searching for an Orlando sports academy, a sports academy in Orlando, FL, or sports academies near me that support athletic and personal development, MB Sports Academy is committed to helping student-athletes grow in every direction.

The movement is growing.

And it starts with the next girl who steps onto the field.
